Today, November 11, is Veterans Day. The date stems from November 11, 1918, when fighting ceased between Allied nations and Germany and an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. While the purpose of the day and its significance has experienced several permutations over the years since President Wilson, in November 1919, proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of "Armistice Day", the nation's observance today on November 11, now called Veterans Day, not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
