THE LOCAL IMPACT OF THE CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ACT

When we first heard about the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), the rather confusing and surprising law Congress passed in an apparent knee-jerk reaction to the spate of lead-tainted toys from China, we wondered about its impact on stores like Dripping's own Itsy Bitsy Spider, the local children's clothing consignment store, as well as our Hill Country Senior Citizens Thrift Store.

In a nutshell, beginning February 10, 2009, the CPSIAprohibits the sale of children’s products (including clothes) if they contain more than 600 parts per million (ppm) total lead. The upshot of this law would mean resellers would be subjected to the costly testing of their inventory to prove each item did not exceeed the lead limit. The financial impact on not only the resellers, including charitable thrift store many of whom derive much of their annual income from the resale of children's clothes, but those customers whose budgets rely on consignment and thrift store items, would be devastaing. And, where would all those used unsold, unused clothes go?

While the reality of the impending law still has many scratching their understandably worried heads, it does look like the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which implements the law, has backed off a bit with regard to secondhand and nonprofit thrift stores, by saying that these resellers are not required to test but are still subject to civil and/or criminal penalties if they do sell items that exceed the lead limit. Not surprisingly, this still has many resellers worried and in limbo. And, what about those who sell their kids' outgrown clothes on Craigslist and eBay?

The National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops have rallied to "Save Children's Resale" and is urging customers to call and write their Congressmen now (February 10th is just around the corner). You can learn more, and download a sample letter, on their site by clicking here.

DRIPPING SPRINGS LOCALS PARTICIPATE IN INAUGURATION

No matter what your party affiliation, witnessing the peaceful transition of power in our country is something in which we can all take pride. While most of us in Dripping will be watching on television, locals Kathy and Tom Duck, owners of Star of Texas Liquor & Wine are in our nation's capital this week to participate in many of the events surrounding the inauguration of our 44th President, Barack Obama. Tom is a lobbyist for rural water districts in Texas and has an office in Washington with a bird’s eye view of the United States Capitol where the swearing-in ceremony will take place on Tuesday, January 20th. With their Washington "in", Star of Texas Liquor & Wine will play host to several public and private events honoring our new President. The Ducks are excited about their involvement and the chance to bring a Dripping connection to this historic event. “It is quite an honor for a mom and pop store in Dripping Springs to be able to participate in the inaugural activities," enthused Kathy Duck.

As it turns out, inaugural events are not unfamiliar to the Ducks, as they have attended the past four presidential inaugurations. They also plan to attend and participate as a sponsor of the Black Tie & Boots Inaugural Ball hosted by the Texas State Society of Washington. The Ducks note that the Black Tie and Boots party is the best party in town with over 10,000 people expected to attend including President George W. Bush.

Kathy and Tom opened Star of Texas Liquor & Wine in 2005 and moved to Dripping Springs in 2006. They are very active in the community and have sponsored numerous events for local charities and nonprofit organizations.

DRIP TRIP: REAL ALE BREWERY IN BLANCO

Today marks the first of what we hope will be an ongoing series of posts featuring fun activities no more than 30 minutes from Dripping Springs, using the intersection of RR12 and Highway 290 as our starting point.

We're starting to get the sneaking suspicion there are quite a few homebrewers and serious beer fans around Dripping Springs. Whether you fall into the former or latter category, if you want to learn more about the beer brewing process or just appreciate the end result, the Real Ale Brewing Company tour on Friday afternoons is more than worth the 30 minute drive to Blanco.

Real Ale began in modest digs over a decade ago, but thanks to the quality and popularity of their beer, moved to their current, larger facility. While increased in scale and modern conveniences (they only recently replaced their 1940s bottle labeler), the attention given to the beer and its drinkers remains distinctly personal. On our last visit, head brewer Erik Ogershok led the tour and his love of beer and the brewing process was as clear as their Rio Blanco Pale Ale. Before and after the tour, free tastings are available and offer the opportunity to sample some of the Real Ale brews that are only available seasonally, or not readily available in Dripping Springs, such as the obsession-worthy Coffee Porter, a dark beer brewed with organic barley and organic fair trade coffee from Katz Coffee Roasters.

Currently, the Real Ale Brewing Company’s tasting room is open on Fridays from 2:00 – 5:00PM with the tour starting at 4:00PM. Real Ale is located just a few minutes from the Blanco town square at 231 San Saba Ct. From the intersection of RR12 and Highway 290, head west on 290. Continue on 290, then to 281. Turn left at San Saba Ct. The brewery will be on the left. Note: You can also take 165 to Blanco, which is our favored route because when you hit “the divide” the view is breathtaking.

DRIPPING TREES: OAK WILT SEMINAR - INITIAL RECAP

We attended the oak wilt seminar at City Hall on Tuesday and what we learned was both enligtening and concerning. Some of what we learned from Texas Forest Service Staff Forester Eric Beckers also seemed to contradict what we thought we knew about when to prune our live oaks, and how to dispose of infected trees. We're studying the matter more and hope to have a more in-depth report on the seminar, plus information received from local realtor and real estate expert Sandra Steele on the financial impact of oak wilt on Dripping Springs property, by next week. In the meantime, given the upcoming cold temperatures (this is key), we wanted to do a brief recap.

As many of us know, oak wilt is a devastating tree disease that is killing our Hill Country oak trees. It is caused by a fungus carried by beetles. When an infected beetle lands on a fresh pruning cut, it can infect the tree. Most thusly infected oak trees will die within a few months and, thanks to the massive root system of live oaks, spread the disease to other trees.

You can prevent oak wilt by painting fresh pruning wounds immediately after you cut the branch. Do not pass go, don't stop for a lemonade, spray immediately so the beetles don't go there first (these things are tiny and don't wear reflective orange vests, so you really won't see them coming). Cover the entire wound with a thin coating of paint.

Next, according to Forester Beckers, the beetles only hate to be out and about in extreme cold and extreme heat (like you do) and, therefore, those are the best times to do any pruning (but you must still paint). If the weatherfolk are right, we have some cold temperatures coming our way, so if you need to cut do so when it's cold. Beckers also advises against doing any cutting between February and June, so time is drawing nigh.

Thirsty Thursday is back in poetic action tonight starting 7:00PM at New Life Lutheran Church (120 Frog Pond Lane). The open mic event welcomes poets, storytellers, songwriters, and musicians. Admission is free, but participants are encouraged to bring food pantry donations. This week's poetry theme is "Dreams". Plus, Hill Country author Karen Hulene Bartell will share from her latest novel, Untimely Partners, the first of a series of “Mayan Mysteries”. Bartell describes her novel, due for release in February, as a paranormal time-travel romance set in ancient Toltec, Mayan, and Aztec locations. DRIPPING SPRINGS IN FINALS FOR TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE GRANT PROGRAM

In the Babble's 8 Favorite Things in Dripping Springs in 2008, we included Harrison Ranch Park, the 64 acre property that the City of Dripping Springs purchased early last year. The City's vision to use the property as an agricultural themed park with facilities for horse riding and livestock and other activities reflecting the area’s cultural and historical significance may now be growing closer to reality. Out of 26 statewide eligible applications submitted for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Local Park Grants Program, the City of Dripping Springs has scored in the top six communities and their project recommended for possible funding of $500,000 toward park improvements at Harrison Ranch Park. The final review will be made at a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, January 22nd in Austin.

If the project is approved as recommended by the Texas Parks and Wildlife staff, more than 6 acres of the property surrounding Little Barton Creek will be set aside as a dedicated wildlife preservation and conservation area. Other planned park developments include an open air pavilion suited for equestrian and livestock events, a play ground, primitive tent campsites, a crushed granite pedestrian trail for walkers, hikers and runners, a path which will support bicycles and wheelchairs, open play area, equestrian trails, an 18-hole course for disk (Frisbee) golf, two regulation horseshoe and washer courts, and designated picnic areas. To construct these various park venues, the City plans to utilize “green” methods whenever possible such as selection of recycled and regional materials, diligent management of construction waste, and preservation of existing trees and foliage.

DRIPPING TREES: CREEK ROAD DECLARES "VIC'TREE!"

Representing several miles of Creek Road, here in Dripping Springs, 17 property owners met with Hays County Commissioner Karen Ford last night in the home of a Creek Road resident to discuss the County’s tree clearing on Creek Road. Having witnessed the over-cutting or "skinning" of trees from other Dripping Springs roads, the property owners had quickly formed a coalition in early December to halt the cutting on their road. Since then, they have been in contact with Commissioner Ford to try and reach a reasonable solution. Their efforts culminated last night as Ford agreed that any additional tree cutting would be done by appointment only, and with the property owner present at the cutting. Residents also have the option of any necessary cutting being done by themselves or their own arborists. Further, the purpose of the cutting is limited to raising the canopy over the road, just to the maximum legal height of a truck, and to address any potential oak wilt problems not already carefully handled by the residents themselves. The previous mandated specs that required extensive cutting on both sides of the road have been abandoned.

Creek Road residents, including one whose family has owned property since the 1950s, were concerned not only by the aesthetic devastation witnessed on other roads in the area, but by the consequent safety and speeding problems created by clearing a wider swath along the roads. Supported by recent studies showing narrow streets slow traffic and reduce vehicular crashes, and the implicit correlation to rural roads framed on either side by mature trees, as well as the inherent value in protecting the charm and aesthetics of Dripping Springs roads, a principal organizer of the coalition proposed the possibility of a Scenic Roads Program for Hays County to address these very issues and, to which, Ford seemed receptive.

Ford’s outreach and attendance were appreciated by all the property owners, many of whom could remember a time when a Hays County Commissioner would never have taken the time to meet with his/her constituents in a resident’s home. Ford admitted that this was not typically how Hays County has handled things, but also indicated it was maybe time for that to change.

LCRA: INTERIM REPAIRS MADE

UPDATE: Interim repairs were made Monday night to a severed electrical line providing power to the pumps at the West Travis County Regional Water System (in western Travis County and northern Hays County). Despite the restoration of power, LCRA asks customers to curtail use of irrigation systems until permanent repairs are made. That process could take several days. The affected area includes residents in Bee Cave and other communities along Texas 71 and RR 620; and Dripping Springs, along with developments on US 290.

LCRA ASKS RESIDENTS OF WEST TRAVIS SYSTEM TO CUT BACK WATER USE IMMEDIATELY

The Lower Colorado River Authority is asking customers of the West Travis County Regional Water System (in western Travis County and northern Hays County) to immediately cut back water use this afternoon due to an equipment problem.

The affected area includes residents in Bee Cave and other communities along Texas 71and RR 620; and Dripping Springs, along with developments on US 290.

Residents and businesses should turn off their irrigation systems now and stop outdoor use. Curtail all water use to the extent possible.

Around noon today, contractors working on an expansion of the system inadvertently cut an underground electrical cable that services the raw water intake pumps. That means water cannot be delivered to the water treatment plant, which is near the intersection of Texas 71 and Bee Caves Road. There were no injuries involved when the electrical cable was cut.

Water storage tanks contain enough water to supply customers into Monday night. LCRA officials expect repairs to require more than 10 hours, therefore customers could experience water shortages starting Monday evening or early Tuesday morning if customers do not cut back on water use or if repairs require more time.

The destructive tree disease oak wilt has left an unfortunate and indelible mark on the Dripping Springs tree population and our landscape. Many new Central Texas residents (as well as old-timers) are not aware of their ability to stop (and spread) the epidemic that has killed more than 1 million trees in 70 Central Texas counties. Tomorrow (Tuesday) evening, the City of Dripping Springs is having a "Managing Oak Wilt" seminar. If you have any questions about whether your trees are at risk for oak wilt, how oak wilt is spread, and how to prevent it, this free seminar presented by Texas Forest Service Staff Forester, Eric Beckers would be the time to get answers.

We confess to being Craigslist addicts (one Babbler has two longhorns courtesy Craigslist), because in the midst of the used Playstations, entertainment centers, and wedding dresses, we not only find things we actually need (and cheaply so), but also things that capture our imagination. Our current Craigslist obsession is a "mobile cafe" for sale in Dripping Springs. Per the description (and accompanying photos) this is a 1975 International Harvester Double Decker Bus that has been converted into a cafe on wheels. The work put into the bus (and the reason for sale) is all detailed in the listing which can be seen here. Note: Craigslist postings can be deleted at any time by the author. We don't know who is selling the bus or what the sale status is, so the link could be gone at any time.

CITY OF DRIPPING SPRINGS ENACTS NEW SIGN ORDINANCE

Dripping Springs City Council adopted a new sign ordinance at their regular council meeting on December 9, 2008 and began enforcing it as of January 1st. The ordinance affects the development and use of property within the corporate limits of the City of Dripping Springs and its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). The ordinance was researched and considered for several years to prevent traffic hazards and reduce the clutter and aesthetic harm to the rural landscape and highway corridors. The intent was to ensure future signs are properly constructed and maintained, compatible with the historic, rustic and architectural character of Dripping Springs, as well as to meet driver and pedestrian (we wish) safety guidelines per the laws of the State of Texas.

DRIPPING MUSIC: CENTENARY COLLEGE CHOIR @ DSUMC TONIGHT

Since 1941 the Centenary College Choir has performed throughout the world: singing for front-line troops in Korea, many American and European heads of state, NATO and American armed forces worldwide, ten international conventions of Lions International, three times for the General Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Council of Bishops, and two lengthy engagements at New York's "Radio City Music Hall." And tonight? They're performing right here in Dripping Springs at the Dripping Springs United Methodist Church. The choir will perform in the sanctuary starting at 7:00PM but, starting at 5:30PM, the church is hosting a fried chicken dinner (opposite end of the sanctuary, by the gym).

DRIPPING MUSIC: ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO, et al CONCERT

The Babblers have been lucky enough to enjoy some relatively memorable musical experiences, from an an up-close and all-night Prince jam session in Las Vegas to standing in the middle of Reunion Arena in Dallas, next to the sound guy, surrounded by thousands of fans screaming for Melissa Etheridge, at the height of her career. As we exited last night's Alejandro Escovedo benefit concert for Parkside Hill Country School, held at the Memory Lane Event Center here in Dripping Springs, we agreed it made everyone's "top 3" list.

Escovedo, backed by David Pulkingham and Charlie Sexton on guitars and vocals, Warren Hood on violin, and Brian Standefer on cello (if last night was any indication, every rock band should have a violinist and cellist), played a jam-packed set including several songs from Escovedo's raved about latest release Real Animal which author Stephen King ranked at #5 in his "Top 10 Albums of 2008" for Entertainment Weekly. Last night's chill in the air evoked a "Canadian music festival" feel, but when the band left the stage and played their final two songs standing in a circle, in the middle of the audience, the temperature wasn't the reason we had chills.

On Sunday, January 4th, music superstar Alejandro Escovedo is playing a benefit concert for his daughter's school, Parkside Hill Country School of Wimberley, at Dripping's Memory Lane (from 290 & 12, go 4.3 miles headed toward Wimberley, take a right on KC Memory Lane and go about 1/4 a mile). Escovedo will be backed by guitarist Charlie Sexton, cellist Brian Standefer, and violinist Warren Hood. Hood’s combo will open the show, which also features singer-songwriter Amanda Mora. In Dripping Springs, advance tickets are available at Itsy Bitsy Spider (on Mercer) for $25 (their hours aren't standard, so call first to see if they're open @ 512-858-2688). Tickets will be $30 at the door. Concert doors open @ 4:00PM.

The Big Drip is not just ice cream and sweets; they open every morning at 7:00AM with fresh-brewed coffee and the best savory kolaches we've ever had. The sausage and cheese to bread ratio is perfect. There are no superfluous bready bites just to get to the stars of the kolache show, rather the snap of the sausage and ooze of the cheese is immediate. And, speaking of the sausage, it's sliced in a clever fashion to also give complete side-to-side coverage (again, perfecting the ratio).

BLOOM
Elizabeth McIntosh and her landscaper husband John have created a colorful and charming oasis on the grounds of Rolling in Thyme & Dough with their beautiful nursery, Bloom. Thanks to Bloom, our own gardens bloomed beautifully this year as Elizabeth patiently helped us choose the right plants for our respective homes (and we love her deer resistance scale).

CHICKEN MOUSSE RAVIOLI @ CREEK ROAD CAFE
We remember with great excitement when we first saw the Creek Road Cafe sign go up at the former Orgeron's location. We liked the local-vibe name and the simple, but country-hip, look of the sign; once inside, we were not disappointed by the new, soothing, muted colors and use of local photographs. But what about the food? We've become at least semi-regulars and have yet to be disappointed. While we could wax poetic over the spicy shrimp dish with sausage and cheese grits, we're dedicating this 2008 memory to their refined (not fussy) ravioli stuffed with chicken mousse, dressed with a cream sauce, and finished with chopped pistachios.

HARRISON RANCH PARK
Early in 2008, the City of Dripping Springs acquired Harrison Ranch Park, located directly across from Dripping Springs Elementary School off of RR 12. The 64 acre property, on rolling Hill Country land complete with charming farmhouse (wrap-around porch, no less), should prove to be a real boon for the Dripping Springs community and culture. In November, the City hosted Wines, Sunsets, & Stars, a tasting of local wines, and the City's inaugural event held at the park. We look forward to similar events at the park in 2009.

CHICKEN FAJITA TACOS @ DRIPPING'S ORIGINAL FLORES
Thinking back on our favorite things, they're clearly, umm, food-focused. Indeed, it was a bit of a stress-eating year, but thanks to several Dripping establishments that eating was no dull, mindless endeavor. A consistent (at least twice a week) standby was "chicken fajita taco with pico and cheese, please" at Dripping's original Flores in the green and yellow taco shack (not the new restaurant by Kirby Springs). Their breakfast tacos are also the best we've ever had, but we could not have survived lunchtime in 2008 without those chicken fajita tacos. The chicken is tender and perfectly spiced, the cheese is mild and melty, and the pico is fresh and crisp. Wrap it all in a soft, flour tortilla, drizzle a little red sauce, drizzle a little green sauce, and take the perfect bite.

PAIN AU CHOCOLAT (AKA CHOCOLATE DANISH) @ ROLLING IN THYME AND DOUGH
In February we were lucky enough to once again visit Paris, France, where our strolls along the Seine and through awe-inspiring cathedrals were interrupted only by lingering repasts at cozy cafes. Every morning was begun with a stop at a patisserie for "un café et pain au chocolat". But, interestingly enough, no Parisian pain au chocolat could match the perfect balance of flaky, buttery pastry and rich, silky chocolate being turned out right here in Dripping Springs at Rolling in Thyme & Dough. The little sign in their pastry case may declare it a "chocolate danish", but a rose by any other name is still our favorite pain au chocolat in the world.

DRIPPING TREES: STRIPPING TREES - FOLLOW UP

On December 1, we reported that residents on Creek Road had rallied to halt the County's tree cutting on their road. Having witnessed the over-cutting or "skinning" of trees from other Dripping Springs roads, the Creek Road residents quickly formed a coalition and, thanks to their concerted efforts, the cutting crews were pulled. No more cutting crews were seen on Creek Road until today. We just received a report from a resident who met with them and it looks as though the cutting specs have been changed from 10 feet back from hardtop (12 feet up), to 4-5 feet back from hardtop (12 feet up). It sounds as though these new specs are not set in stone, but it's hopefully a start at trying to preserve the trees and atmosphere of our Hill Country backroads. On Sunday, January 4th, music superstar Alejandro Escovedo is playing a benefit concert for his daughter's school, Parkside Hill Country School of Wimberley, at Dripping's Memory Lane (from 290 & 12, go 4.3 miles headed toward Wimberley, take a right on KC Memory Lane and go about 1/4 a mile). Escovedo will be backed by guitarist Charlie Sexton (yes!), cellist Brian Standefer, and violinist Warren Hood. Hood’s combo will open the show, which also features singer-songwriter Amanda Mora. KEYE has a feature on Amber Fett, a Dripping Springs teenager who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and who is awaiting a double lung transplant. Through the years, the Christmas break from school provided the best opportunity for Amber to get her lungs cleared, which required lengthy hospital stays. During those stays, she noticed other kids at the hospital who didn't have anybody or any gifts for Christmas day, and she decided to change that. Amber created the non-profit Amber's Angels, now in its fourth year, to deliver Christmas gifts bags to children at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Get the complete, and inspiring, story here.

We can't help you fit into your skinny jeans after Christmas, but we can take one post-Christmas worry off your list: The City of Dripping Springs is offering the city’s first ever Christmas Tree Recycling Program. Marcus Lees, owner of Lees Trees, has generously donated the services of his company to recycle undecorated Christmas trees into high quality mulch that will be given away for free.

Residents participating in the Christmas Tree Recycling Program should drop off their trees, also free of charge, at the Triangle, located at intersection of Hwy 290 and RR 12, from 8:00AM until 5:00PM on Saturdays, January 3 and 10, 2009. The mulch will be available on a first-come-first-service basis. Individuals picking up mulch should bring their own bags and tools required to carry it away.

Before depositing trees, all tree stands, lights, ornaments and other tree decorations must be removed. Please do not illegally dump any other items at the drop off location. If you have any questions, contact City Hall at (512)858-4725 for more information.

At a holiday party last night, one of the appetizers served was venison sausage made from a deer harvested by one of the party hosts. This turned the conversation to knowing your food source. Some preferred a don't ask-don't tell policy, while others wouldn't touch a hamburger unless the cow could be identified, which brought us round to Red Barn Beef here in Dripping Springs. On a working cattle ranch in operation since 1934, the grass-fed beef is "produced with humane, sustainable, and natural methods". The beef can be ordered directly from Red Barn Beef (see their website here for minimum quantities and ordering details) and we're getting word that Onion Creek Farm may also have some available for purchase shortly (we'll keep you posted).

And if you think that’s not saying much, just let the sun set and then take a short drive to Driftwood. Hill Country holiday magic lies just down Ranch Road 12.

Judy and Bobbie Templeton have lived near Dripping Springs on Elder Hill Road in Driftwood for 35 years and, for the past 34 years, they have lit up their property every Christmas with an ever-growing holiday display. Now entailing at least 33,000 lights (conservative estimate) festooned across approximately 3 acres, the Templetons are once again spreading their Christmas joy.

Beginning around November 1st of each year, wife Judy starts wrapping trees, testing timers, and checking lights. The week before Thanksgiving, husband Bobbie takes a few days off work to run wiring and set up their burgeoning collection of lighted figures. Start to finish, the couple estimates it takes about 2 full weeks to get everything up and running. Just setting up the electricity takes a couple of days.

The Christmas light tradition began humbly enough in 1974, with Judy painting reindeer made from plywood Bobbie had cut with a jig saw. Simple spotlights were the only electrical concerns then. But, about 10 years ago at a garage sale, they purchased a couple of light-wrapped wire deer and the rest, as they say, is history. The Templetons try to add a new feature every year (to accommodate their holiday lights collection they’ve built dedicated storage rooms in their big barn). The new feature of this Christmas season is a 10 foot trellis with more than 1,200 lights flashing on and off to 20 different Christmas songs.

They make no money from their efforts (only spend it) and every year brings blown breakers and fuses and plotting an intricate maze of extension cords and time clocks (not that they’re complaining), so why do they it?

“We just want to wish everyone that passes on our country road a very merry Christmas and a happy new year,” says Judy. “We hope our lights bring them a smile.”

To see the magical display, driving from Dripping Springs, take RR 12 headed toward Wimberley. From the intersection of 290 and RR 12 it’s about 6 miles to Elder Hill Road (the Driftwood Vineyards turn off), take a left. Drive a couple of miles up Elder Hill Road. You’ll know it when you see it.

The Templetons keep the light display turned on every evening during the Christmas season from about 5:45PM to 10:00PM.

UPDATE: Judy wanted to make sure that the other spirited Driftwood folks get recognized. In "downtown" Driftwood, at the intersection of 150 and Elder Hill, just 1.5 miles from the Templeton home, the old Masonic Lodge built in 1924 (now Chic + Green) is done in lights and the Methodist church next door, built in 1884, has also turned out the Christmas spirit. From Dripping Springs, you can also get to Driftwood by taking RR 12 to FM 150. "Downtown" Driftwood is at the intersection of FM 150 and Elder Hill Road.

Hays County Sheriff and Dripping Springs resident Allen Bridges died early this morning. Update from News 8 Austin:

"According to Hays County Public Information Officer Leroy Opiela, last night Sheriff Bridges spoke at a Brown Santa fundraiser then went home. It was there that he collapsed. His family tried to revive him using CPR and called an ambulance. Sheriff Bridges was taken to South Austin Medical Center where he died...Bridges was a resident of Dripping Springs for 21 years. He leaves behind his wife Kathy, four daughters, one son and eleven grandchildren...Sheriff Allen Bridges was 63 years old."

DRIPPING HELP: MOBILE HOME TRAGEDY AFTERMATH

As was widely reported, on November 10th a tragedy occured at Terry's Mobile Home Park on RR 12 here in Dripping Springs. That morning, a man took a female hostage in one of the homes, leading to a SWAT stand-off, ultimately ending with multiple rounds of tear gas being shot into the home and the man committing suicide. The story was told that day, and we heard nothing more on the matter. Until today, when we learned the ripple effect of that tragedy.

The mobile home where the events took place is owned by a 60 year old woman who has lived in the park for 30 years. She had recently paid off the home and lived there with her granddaughter, the female taken hostage. In the wake of the tear gas shot into the home, it became uninhabitable (not to mention the trauma of splattered blood from the suicide). The powerful chemicals in tear gas linger long after the event, invading the walls of the home and causing eye irritations and respiratory distress. Crime scene clean up companies specialize in tear gas clean up, but at a considerable cost. With her home uninhabitable due to the toxic tear gas and associated damage, the grandmother sought victim's assistance help but was reportendly denied. Now, friends are seeking help for her. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how to get this long-time Dripping Springs resident back into a home, please call family friend Jana Erickson at 512-496-5338. As of yesterday, homeboy Lance Armstrong's spokeman confirmed he will be riding in the 2009 Tour. The Dripping Springs connection as reason to obsess over the Tour is also now confirmed.

DRIPPING TREES: STRIPPING TREES

Creek Road residents rallied today to halt the County's tree cutting on their road. Having witnessed the over-cutting or "skinning" of trees from other Dripping Springs roads, the Creek Road residents quickly formed a coalition and, thanks to their concerted efforts throughout this morning, the cutting crews were pulled from Creek Road just a short time ago. No more cutting will take place until our County Commissioner Karen Ford has driven the road with the project engineer. Creek Road residents urge those affected by the County tree cutting to contact Ford and express your concern over the amount of trees being cut and the cutting methodology. The residents raise concerns over increased speeding along the road due to the increased openness and, at a time when the county is in the throes of a tree disease epidemic, it would seem greater care and preservation would be observed.

DRIPPING TREES: DROOPING TREES

The City of Dripping Springs Community Newsletter has an informative article on oak wilt, the destructive tree disease that has left an unfortunate and indelible mark on the Dripping Springs tree population and our landscape. Many new Central Texas residents (as well as old-timers) are not aware of their ability to stop (and spread) the epidemic that has killed more than 1 million trees in 70 Central Texas counties. If you received the newsletter in the mail, be sure and check out the article and the timely tips for helping manage oak wilt. If you did not receive the newsletter, or if you want to learn more, visit www.texasoakwilt.org. Highlights for helping prevent the spread include least hazardous times of year to prune (such as coldest days of midwinter) and the importance of immediately painting all wounds on oaks. Even if you know about oak wilt, your neighbors may not and oak wilt spreads via a vast interconnected root system. What we must do is spread this information.

The oak wilt problem is a serious one, affecting not only the beauty of our landscape, but our land values as well. Indeed, the Dripping Springs City Council is considering adopting a disesed tree ordinance to help prevent the spread of oak wilt. A free workshop on Managing Oak Wilt will be presented at City Hall in January, but don't wait until then to learn more.

DRIPPING TRUFFLES: PART DEUX

In September, we posted about Francois Picart, a Frenchman who ventured to Dripping Springs in the 1980s and dared to try and cultivate the elusive truffle here in our limestone hills. Picart dreamed of making Dripping the truffle capital of the world, planting truffle spore-innoculated oak seedlings on property off of Prochnow Road and Bell Springs Road. Picart's "Agri-Truffle Inc", the American affiliate of the still-existing French concern "Agri-Truffe", eventually dissolved, but evidence of his grand experiment remains. While the trees planted on Prochnow are now gone, on Bell Springs Road, just barely visible behind a tree, is a sign identifying "Texas First Truffle Orchard" and past that, now a bit unruly and overgrown, sits a small orchard of those trees.

In our original post we asked if anyone knew more of Picart and his truffles. We were recently contacted by the wonderful Jim Swift of KXAN who let us know he did a report on Picart in the late 1980s. Jim came to Dripping last week to do a follow-up story which, as we understand it, should air on KXAN tonight during the 10:00PM broadcast.

DRIPPING CHRISTMAS: HOLIDAY LIGHTING CONTEST

And speaking of art, or at least artistic expression, as you drift off for a turkey and carbs-inspired nap on Thursday (just a few winks before the UT-A&M game starts), let visions of strategically placed white twinkle lights dance in your head because November 29th (Saturday) is the deadline to submit your entry form for the City of Dripping Springs' Holiday Lighting Contest.

The city is encouraging residents and businesses to let their holiday spirit shine in three contest categories: residential, business, and public service/non-profit. Entry to the contest is free and everyone is welcome to participate. All entries will be due to City Hall by November 29th. Judging is scheduled to take place December 1st through 3rd.

Lighting contest entry forms are located on the Christmas on Mercer Street webpage on the City of Dripping Springs website at cityofdrippingsprings.com, or stop by City Hall, located at 511 Mercer Street, to pick one up.

An awards presentation for the lighting contest winners will be held at the Christmas on Mercer Street Lighting of the Tree Ceremony at 6:30PM on Saturday, December 6th. Winners will receive a special award and recognition their business/organization.

DRIPPING ARTISTS: TEXAS ORIGINALS

There is some serious art in these Dripping hills and the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) agrees. The TCA's Texas Original (TxO) program was created to help preserve the unique arts and crafts heritage of Texas and provide Texas artists with an outlet for marketing their products. Artists included in the TxO program have been through a review process overseen by the TCA. When you see the TxO brand, above, often displayed on an artist's website, that means they have been through the TxO process and selected by the commission. A scroll through the commision's website of artists from across the entire state, here, reveals quite the Dripping inclination. Indeed, few towns are as well-represented. Look for Dripping's own Bridget Hauser of Sunset Canyon Pottery, Melodie Greider of Stickhorse Studios, Wayne Rossi of DS Iron Works, and Gary Thompson of Lone Sage Ranch.

JIM MATTOX TO LIE IN STATE AT CAPITOL

Former Texas Attorney General and Dripping Springs resident Jim Mattox, who died in his home last week of an apparent heart attack, will lie in state in the House chamber of the Texas Capitol from 3:00PM to 7:00 PM today (Monday). Family members will be present from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Mr. Mattox is survived by his wife, Marta, his two children, Jim Mattox and Sissi Mattox, both of Dripping Springs, his sister, Janice Mattox of Dallas, and brother, Jerry Mattox of Dallas. Governor Rick Perry ordered flags on state buildings to be lowered to half-staff. The last dignitary to lie in state in the Texas Capitol was former Governor Ann Richards. Funeral services will be at 11:00AM on Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Austin. Burial will be in the State Cemetery.

The Dripping Springs United Methodist Church Christmas Bazaar continues today (Friday) and tomorrow. Friday will feature booths and a silent auction. Saturday will have booths, silent auction, and an added bake sale and BBQ sale. Start the Christmas shopping season early and support the church's Children's Weekday Ministries.

Tonight, Star of Texas Liquor & Wine continues their Beaujolais Nouveau free wine tasting, but quantities are limited, so when it's gone, it's gone! Tasting starts at 6:00PM.

On Saturday, at 1:30PM, the Dripping Springs Community Library presents a fascinating multi-media event, "Riders on the Orphan Train". Between 1854 and 1929 over 25,000 orphans and unwanted children were taken out of New York City and given away at train stations across America. The last train came to Sulphur Springs, Texas in 1929. Discover this largely unknown part of our nation's history through literature, music, archival photographs and film interviews.

It's time for the great brown gravy versus giblet gravy debate to begin raging in our family and it means the release of Beaujolais Nouveau, the young red wine made from the Gamay grape and aged less than a year before it's time to pull the cork! According to French law, and adhered to by retailers worldwide, no Beaujolais Nouveau can be legally sold or released until the third Thursday in November. Star of Texas Liquor & Wine right here in Dripping Springs has secured a few cases of the 2008 vintage that will be flown in from Lyon, France and they're having a tasting party to celebrate from 6:00PM - 8:00PM tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow night, but as this is strictly a limited production wine, when it's gone, it's gone! DRIPPING HOLIDAYS: TOUR OF HOMES

The Friends of the Library Christmas in the Hills Tour of Homes has announced its holiday home line-up for this year and it looks festive, indeed. With a theme of "The Sounds of Christmas", each decor takes on a famous holiday carol from It's Beginning to Look Alot Like Christmas to Auld Lang Syne. This year's tour takes place Saturday, December 6th, from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. Tickets can be preordered through November 22nd for $12 each at the library circulation desk. After that date, the price is $15 each. On December 6th, they will also be sold at the Friends' booth set up as part of "Christmas on Mercer Street," and at participating homes on the tour.

And speaking of the library's booth at "Christmas on Mercer Street", the Friends of the Library are continuing their traditional holiday bake sale. This year, the goodies will be sold at the booth. If you would like to bake something tasty for the library's bake sale, please bring it to the library on Friday afternoon, December 5th. BREAKING: RARE HUMMINGBIRD SPOTTED IN DRIPPING

A rare hummingbird was spotted in a Babble reader's yard yesterday. The bird is a Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae) and, according to hummingbird expert Nancy Newfield, the only other known record of this bird in Central Texas was in San Marcos in the early 1980s. Quite fortuitously, an immature male of the species alit right here in Dripping Springs in the yard of local photographer and bird fan Howard Williams. Williams reports he knew the bird was unique when first observed late yesterday afternoon and, although the light was poor, he was able to get a few photographs of the unique visitor, all of which can be seen here.

We've received a few queries about what's going into the former Dripping Springs Hardware building on RR 12. Earler this year the hardware store was purchased by Whit Hanks who, as we understand it, plans to use for an antique business similar to his current location in Austin. Initially, the building may be used to house overflow from the Austin location. Ultimately, the vision is said to be a retail space with his home furnishings store and complementary businesses.

Apparently a group of old-school coffee drinkers traditionally met early every morning at Rosie's Tamale House, but after Rosie's closed they were left adrift and coffee-less. After word reached Oak Creek Cafe, it started opening earlier, at 6:30AM, just so our displaced and desperately decaffeinated java joes would have a place to meet and drink coffee.

While the purpose of the day and its significance has experienced several permutations over the years since President Wilson, in November 1919, proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of "Armistice Day", the nation's observance today on November 11, now called Veterans Day, not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
